A Clinical study of the lateral deviation of mandible in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between maxillofaical patterns and cleft alveolus and palate. Fifteen case of unilateral cleft lip and palate patients over Hellman dental age. ¥³ A was studied. Posteroanterior and
lateral
cephalograms were taken. The line running through the Lo(lateral orbitale : the cross point of inferior orbital margin and oblique orbital margin) bilaterally was indicated by the horizontal line, and the midline ws perpendicular to the
horizontal
line
through the center of the CG (crista gali). The lateral deviation of the mandible was evaluated by : 1) inclination of the plane running through the apex of the lateral alveolar process of upper molor bilaterally, inclination of occlusal plane
and
mandibular plane, 2) distant from horizontal line and midline to the apex of lateral alveolar process of upper molor, occlusal plane and mandible plane. And the deficiency of the maxillary growth was evaluated by the curvature of nasal septum
which
was
measured by connecting the CG, the most lateral and inferior point of nasal septum. And the relationship was made with the distance of anterior facial height, posterior facial height and middle facial depth. Then statistical analysis was
performed.
@ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1. The mandible was tended t deviated to the cleft side.
2. There were positive relationship between mandible deviation and inclination of the plane running through the apex of alveolar process of upper lateral molor, occlusal plane and mandibular plane.
3. There were significantly positive relationship between mandible deviation and distance from the midline to both lateral alveolar process of upper molar and Go.
4. There were significantly negative relationship between mandible deviation and distance from the horizontal line to the lateral alveolar process of the upper molar, occlusal plane and Go.
5. The curvature of the nasal septum was suggested to indicate the potential of maxillary growth. The results of this study suggested that deficiency of growth in the maxilla of the cleft side significantly alters the curvature of nasal septum
and
the
position of the mandible.
